That Summer In Capri

BACKGROUND

Italian pop music of the vibrant 1960s was our inspiration. During this era, songwriters blended traditional Italian melodies with rock and roll, pop, jazz, and beat music from America and the United Kingdom.

The decade saw the rise of iconic stars, including Mina, Adriano Celentano, Lucio Battisti, Patty Pravo, Domenico Modugno, Peppino di Capri, and Ornella Vanoni. These artists infused their music with distinctive sounds, pushing boundaries by experimenting with different genres to reflect social and cultural changes underway in Italy then. The country was emerging from the shadow of WWII, evolving from a rural economy into one of the world’s most advanced and culturally sophisticated nations.

Their lyrics explored themes of love, loss, youth, fate, and rebellion. They resonated with a generation experiencing rapid transformation amid political tensions and cultural revolution. Recording technologies helped artists create new sounds. The increasing availability of radio and television widened audiences and solidified the era’s cultural impact. The musicians’ tours brought their music to a global audience. The music remains popular today.

Capri was the perfect place to tell the story of a writer and his songwriter/singer girlfriend as they abandoned the cold, rainy dark of England’s Cotswolds for a new world that promised inspiration. The couple hoped to advance their careers by finding stars and entertainment moguls who spend summers on the island. The writer, Wit, compares his journey to that of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey. The sea, the lands’ staggering beauty, the spirits from ancient times, the ambience… all are transcendent. Love figures into the story—a mystery to be discovered as much as a challenge to be feared if one’s hopes fail.

This is our third musical together, after Carlotta the Musical and Under the Olive Tree. Capri took us in a new direction.

We are fortunate to have the musicians and singers who participated in our projects. Their joy and commitment are inspirations. Together, among us, there is a sense of family.

We hope these songs will make those moments when you are listening even more special.

Avanti fortissimo. Un abbraccio.
